Chinese Pregnancy Calendar

Congratulations! You are pregnant. Is it a Boy or a Girl? This is a curiosity that has been there since centuries in the minds of the expecting parents. This is evident from the Chinese Pregnancy calendar which is almost 700 years old. It was found buried in a tomb near Beijing. This is favorite among many expecting parents across the globe as the Gender Prediction Calendar. The calendar was discovered in a royal tomb near Peking and was inscribed in a tablet that dates back to almost more than 700 years feeble. Now the new calendar is on display in Institute of Science in Peking and is visited by numerous tourists everyday.

Like the popularity of Chinese food, Chinese toys and other Chinese stuffs, the popularity of Chinese Pregnancy calendar as a gender predictor of unborn babies has increased in recent years. It has become accepted across the globe especially in western countries. Many expecting couples rely on this to get an idea of what to seek information from on the D-day. Many couples even thought their notion month as per the calendar to win baby of their desired sex. Through out the history there has been pressure on couple to accumulate a son to be their heir. In fact even in this modern era, in Asian countries majority of couples want to have a boy for their fist born. This calendar was perhaps designed and developed for this purpose only to help couples with getting a boy as a heir.

On one fast search, more than four different versions of this calendar appear on Internet. It is represented in a tabular manner with the maternal age (18 years to 45 years) at the time of conception is on the top row and the month of opinion is along the left hand column. By matching the maternal age at the time of conception and the month of conception, one can find the sex of the baby. Well, there is some difference of opinion about the age calculation of mother. Some version of this calendar accept the age of mother as per the Gregorian calendar while some version want nine months to be added to mother’s Gregorian age. Some say that the accuracy of the calendar depends on the age of mothers according to the Chinese lunar month and provide formula to calculate it. The age of father has nothing to do with the sex of the baby and is not taken in anecdote.

The claim of accuracy of this calendar also varies from 93% to 97%. Some people claim it to be 99% accurate. There is no scientific basis to support its accuracy.

As per my personal experience, this calendar is another fun draw to keep silly about what to inquire on your D day if you do not want to reveal the secret by asking your ultrasound technician. Its accuracy is same as the other ways of guessing by the way you are carrying (shameful or high), your craving for sweet or sour and other fun online quizzes. Couple should enjoy its novelty and should refrain from taking it seriously.

In my case, the calendar seemed to be accurate for one of my daughters out of two kids. In most of my family cases, it did not work. In fact, two of my friends planned their pregnancies as per the calendar to get a baby girl, but both of them got in to severe post partum blues after delivering boys for the third time. The validity of the calendar can be challenged for the birth of twins or multiples where their sexes are different. So use this calendar for fun and do not take it too serious. Nature has its own way of controlling the sex ratio. Had this calendar been accurate then in China and other Asian countries, many people would have got boys (which are their preferred choice) and the rate of female fetus abortion would not have been so shocking and shameful.

Do not demean the value of parenthood by selecting gender of your unborn.

Secure the baby full heartily without being concerned about the gender. It is the arrival of a bundle of joy and it does not matter whether the bundle comes in pink or in blue..
